Outboard Drive Gears and Water Intrusion

Recently several members of our group met at a local marine repair facility to discuss some damage one of our clients' had happen to their vessel.  It was quite interesting seeing all the outboard drives in various stages of disassmebly.  You can learn so much by seeing things taken apart.

These photos demonstrate the difference between a damaged gear and one that has had water contamination in the oil system.

This pinion gear was damaged when the vessel hit a floating object at high speed. Damage is limited in this case to just one gear tooth.

Here we have pitting and corrosion due to water contamination.  Notice how the pitting is on several gear teeth and not just one.  In fact, over 90% of the gears showed pitting on this pinion.
